“1 in 5 That’s My Story” is an organic and evolving project that seeks to gather the very personal and real stories of sexual assault and harassment in America. Let’s work together to end sexual abuse, harassment, and the culture of rape in our country. We believe you and your story!

By sharing your story (anonymously) you can begin the healing process, and in turn, HELP others to HEAL who haven’t yet had the COURAGE to SHARE their story. We can stop the cycle of abuse by speaking out! Let’s start NOW!

According to a 2013 global review of available data, 35% of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence. However, some national violence studies show that up to 70 per cent of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime from an intimate partner.

1.3 MILLION AMERICAN WOMEN ANNUALLY MAY BE VICTIMS OF RAPE OR ATTEMPTED RAPE.

1.3 MILLION AMERICAN WOMEN ANNUALLY MAY BE VICTIMS OF RAPE OR ATTEMPTED RAPE.

In a survey completed in the USA by the National Center for Injury Prevention (2010). One in five women have been raped and/or experienced attempted rape in their lifetime. One in four reported having been beaten by an intimate partner. One in six women have been stalked.

12 percent of female rape victims were assaulted when they were 10 years old or younger, but almost half of all female victims said they had been raped before they turned 18. About 80 percent of rape victims reported that they had been raped before age 25.

Rape at a young age was associated with another, later rape; about 35 percent of women who had been raped as minors were also raped as adults, the survey found.  More than half of female rape victims had been raped by an intimate partner, according to the study, and 40 percent had been raped by an acquaintance.  -The National Center for Injury Prevention, 2010 Survey Report

  • Around 120 million girls worldwide (slightly more than 1 in 10) have experienced forced intercourse or other forced sexual acts at some point in their lives.
  • In the United States, 83 per cent of girls in grades 8 through 11 (aged 12 to 16) have experienced some form of sexual harassment in public schools.
  • National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, conducted the survey in 2010.  The study, called the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, was begun in 2010 with the support of the National Institute of Justice and the Department of Defense. The study, a continuing telephone survey of a nationally representative sample of 16,507 adults, defines intimate partner and sexual violence broadly.
  • More often than not, cases of violence against women go unreported. For instance, a study based on interviews with 42,000 women across the 28 Member States of the European Union revealed that only 14 per cent of women reported their most serious incident of intimate partner violence to the police, and 13 per cent reported their most serious incident of non-partner violence to the police.
